Summer Tips to keep your Furbabies safe and happy
Hey Furbabies's parents!
I thought I would make a blog about tips and ideas to make the hot summer safe and comfortable for your pets... I think it's very important to keep them cool and happy during this miserable and heated weather. I have two cats and a dog her name is sophie.. Sophie is a Lhasa apso which means she doesn't have fur, she has hair which grows and grows just like human so I bring her to the groomers every 3 months.. so this is the first tip for you guys..
1) Groom your pets
I'm sure a lot of you guys who do have pets that have longed growing hair do take them to the groomers regularly. But just a reminder even for the people who not only own pets who have long growing hair but pets who are Furry fluffballs, and thick coated furs like huskies, bearded collies, sheepdogs and etc...I think in the summer it's important to just shave them down, or just get their fur or hair cut down very short . Just like humans, animals get very hot as well during the summer so im sure they would be very appreciative and more comfortable without all the hairy extra weight on them.
However your pets can suffer sunburn, so if you do plan on shaving them or getting them groom, be sure to leave at least an inch of hair to protect your pets from the sun's rays. If your pets are already short hair, you probably can just leave them as it is! :) not all pets needs grooming I mean your not going to shave your hairless cat right? So some pets don't need shaving, but you can still have them groom and just trim them down just little but certain type of breeds have certain type of coats don't need to be shaved because it may damage their coat and increase sunburn and skin diseases! If your not sure whether it's safe for your pets to be groomed, shaved, or cut just ask your vet or even the groomer! Make sure you do what is safe and friendly for your pets..
Just a few more grooming tips, trim the hair around their paws.. they do sweat around their paws, brush them regularly or you can even use a de-shedding tool to brush them.
2)Keeping them cool
To keep your Furbabies cool during the summer you can always have them play in water. If your dogs can swim you can have them swim in the pool with you or just have them in the pool with supervision. Bring them to the beach with you, just make sure the beach allows pets. If your dogs can't really swim you can always buy a kiddy pool and fill it with cool water and just have them lay and play in it. If your pets hates water you can also buy a cooling pad for them to lay on. There are a few options of different types of cooling mats such as Automatic dog gel cooling mat, Water-filled dog cooling mat, or Simple gel-filled cooling mat. If you really don't want to spend any money, just freeze or wet your towel and just have them lay on the cold towel, or even an ice pack! I like to add some ice cubes to my pet's water bowls, and sometimes I even pick up an ice cube and run it through the their bodies which may help cool them down. Even though I have central air my house can still get hot on really hot days, so even with the ac on I still have a few fans facing me and pets. If I cant stand it in my room because it's just too hot, I like to go down the basement where it gets pretty cold and nice for me to relax at. One day it was very very hot in my room, even with the ac on and the fans on.. my dog, Sophie was still panting like crazy and was turning and switching positions because she couldn't sleep comfortably, I just brought her down with me to the basement, and we both slept like baby. So sometimes it's just best to stay in a cool place like your basement for you and your pets to stay at and relaxed in.
3) Keeping them safe
DO NOT LOCK YOUR FURBABIES IN A CAR DURING HOT WEATHER!
Locking your pets in your car.. is very dangerous they can die from heatstroke, dehydrations and etc..It is illegal lock them in your car, you will get fine and even get arrested for animal cruelty! if you want to locked them in them car, make sure you have your ac on high to keep them cool.
Ticks/Fleas and heartworm prevention: ticks and fleas doesn't just stop at summer but all year around, so you should have some kind of protections for your pets ALL YEAR AROUND. There are prevention you could use such as application you can put on them, there are some kind of pills they can take, or like Sophie you can use a tick/flea collar. If you want to spend a lot of money they also do sell wipes and spray but don't be cheap in the end your pets will suffer, so please take god care of them and just get the best products. As for heartworm prevention I suggest you to get the chewable pills which you give to them once a month..
Walking your pets: If you guy are planning to walk your pets during the summer, please make sure your walking in the early morning when the sun is not up, and late at night when the sun goes down this way it's cooler for your pets to walk on the pavement. During the summer the pavement ground do get very hot and can burn your furbabies's paws, and it will hurt! So before you want to walk them, for their protection make sure you rub some paw pad protector on their paws, I read Vaseline may help too. I like to walk Sophie on the grass sometimes during hot weather. This may sound silly but because Sophie is only 25lbs i'll just carry her when we get to the hot pavement where the sun is shining down and than ill put her down where there are more shadows, and where the pavement is cooler to walk on.
4) Keep them Hydrated!
Just like humans, animal needs water to stay hydrated, make sure your pets have access to water all the time. Make sure your giving them fresh, clean everyday, I keep like at least 4 water bowls in the house. When I go out take a bottle of water for myself and a little foldable doggie bowl or a disposable cup for me to pour some water for Sophie. You can even ask for a cup of water for free at fast food restaurants too!
5) Give them some cold treats
It's always a great idea to give your furbabies some cold treats to cool them down. Some pets likes ice cubes, some likes ice cream make sure its vanilla not chocolate because that is toxic to them. I like to freeze dental treats and give them to sophie, she likes frozen dental treats. You can even make other frozen homemade treats for your pets! links below are some recipes to make yummy treats t col don your pets, please make sure your food are not toxic to your pets
